I've finally sat through Iron Fist on Netflix and I loved it. I have to admit that I'd put it off after reading the negative responses to the series when it was released, but I honestly don't know what they're talking about.
Iron Fist is a great addition to the Netflix Marvel Universe and I can't wait to watch The Defenders now.
I actually enjoyed this series a lot more than Luke Cage, but it's hard to make direct comparisons because all these shows have some really unique qualities. I just think it's a shame that they try to link them into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe and the ABC TV shows, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter and Inhumans.
I just don't think they gel together and they would be far better off making them separate entities without tacked on references to 'the green guy' and the Battle of New York.
It reminds me of the time when Doctor Who expanded into Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, as they just didn't fit together in a single universe. Alien sex vampires and talking vultures that looked like Muppets (Finn Jones was actually in that episode) were far too much of a contrast and I'm sure I'd feel the same way if Rocket or Doctor Strange ever teamed up with The Defenders.
Before we go any further, let's look at the problems people had with Iron Fist.
I don't really want address the 'controversy' of them not hiring an Asian actor, as it wasn't an Asian character in the comics. I also didn't have a problem with them discarding the costume either, as it looked a lot like Daredevil before he suited up. He's even gone back to the headband in The Defenders trailer, so it would clearly be confusing if they both had them.
This bring me on to one of the biggest issues, the fights. In my opinion, the fights were perfect as they had to do something different from the other shows. Daredevil is Daredevil, so I appreciate the fact that they went in a different direction. I also think the variety will make The Defenders look pretty special.
In terms of the story, I really liked what they were trying to do.
I thought there were some interesting themes here we should all consider. There was a lot about materialism and values that really inspired me and I think anyone interested in this site would get something from it.
It also touched on the beliefs and judgements we make as we go though life, which I found pretty interesting.
It may not have been all out action, but that's what I love about these Netflix Marvel shows. Like the others, I just wish they'd condensed it into eight or nine shows as it often feels like they're having to stretch out the story to fit into thirteen episodes.
This isn't a huge problem though, but it's great to see that The Defenders will be a lot shorter.
We don't have to wait long for it either and I can't wait. I'm also relieved that Iron Fist got another season, as I really think it deserved it.
